I am because We are
This week Matt and I took a day away from the business to attend the Sunrise18 conference. I’m never sure what to expect at these events. There’s always a buzz, interesting people to meet and great things to learn - but, what they always seem to do is remind me of the things that matter the most. And in my case, this is our team. It’s like flying into Sydney after a long trip away only to discover (time and time again) that no matter how much I love to travel, I always love coming home. And when I’m away from our team for even a short period it gives me time to reflect on the unique qualities of excellence that only a team that loves what they are doing will manage to achieve. The continued growth and success of Prezzee can greatly be attrbitued to the mutual respect and common belief we share as a team.
The term Ubuntu is an African term meaning “humanity”. It is often translated as “I am because we are,” and also “humanity towards others”, but is often used in a more philosophical sense to mean “the belief in a universal bond of sharing that connects all humanity”.
This week Ubunto came up in our WIP when our development team presented their highlights from this weeks deployment. They were actually refering to Ubuntu which is also an open source software operating system - but when I commented on “Oh Ubunto” everyone in our team knew the true meaning.
This shared vision of helping others is a philosophy that we all embrance in our office. Day in and out - it is the small gestures for others that keeps us moving forward to bigger and better things. It’s one thing to have great talent, to drive sales or launch new products but at the very core of every great business is a common bond that binds humanity.
If anyone is to ask me “What is your secret sauce?” - then this is my answer.
